Mission

Sun God Archery at UCSD

The purpose of SGA is to develop a community of athletes who learn and practice life and leadership skills through the sport of archery.

Every sport in society ultimately serves the same purpose—to teach people the skills that can’t be taught by a book or in a classroom. We focus on these skills to help our members be better prepared to tackle the myriad of challenges they will undoubtedly face in their futures whether it is with their careers, their health, their relationships and families, and other communities they may be part of.

SGA Values

Community

We respect, encourage, support, and challenge one another, and our community as a whole.

Personal Growth

We are driven to constantly improve—our technique, our mindset, our knowledge, our personal qualities, and our community.

Life Balance

We strive to find harmony between our relationships, responsibilities, and interests, and learn how to prioritize what is important.

Sportsmanship

We are committed to holding ourselves and those around us to the highest standards of ethics, fair-play, and respect.

UCSD and SGA Archery Team Values

The UCSD and SGA Archery Teams are housed under the umbrella of Sun God Archery at UCSD. SGA Members are not required to compete, but many choose to do so, and as a result have several team values in addition to the SGA values.

Team Unity

We care about each other—our goals, our successes, our setbacks, and our growth. We support each other and never leave anyone behind.

Optimism

We believe the future is bright—that we will get better, together.

Mindfulness

We strive to stay focused in the present which enables us to correct mistakes from our past and make strides towards our future.

Our Story

SGA was officially founded at the end of the 2012-2013 academic year after the founders decided they wanted to share their incredible experiences in archery with the rest of the UC San Diego and surrounding San Diego community. The first active year of the club (2013-2014), there was a little more than thirty members with a small competitive team of around ten members. In the following years, club membership boomed, quickly surpassing over 130 members annually, with over 50 members a year becoming UCSD Archery Team Members. In competition, SGA started developing high performance athletes who won local, regional, and national titles—almost all of whom started archery when they joined SGA.

As SGA has grown and has had more opportunities to understand the needs of its membership, and the role it can play in the UC San Diego and Collegiate Archery community, the club has developed a range of programs for members to learn and growth together—from community development through the family program, to leadership education through SGA LEADS, all the way through financial training through SGA FLIRT (because financial literacy is sexy).

In 2018, celebrating its five year anniversary, SGA launched the SGA Alumni Association—a separate 501(c)3 nonprofit who connects our community even after graduation and helps us learn how to translate the skills we learn in archery and through SGA to create positive impacts in our lives and communities. The Alumni community spans a wide range of educational backgrounds, careers, work industries, and outside interests and hobbies, and often leverages that experience to create programs such as SGA LEADS, as well as hosting seminars and workshops which better help our members prepare for their careers.

SGA continues to grow—searching for ways to better strive towards its mission, and examine how it can continue making a positive impact to its communities.

Arduus Ad Solem

The SGA Motto was created near the end of the 2014-2015 academic year as part of the Apollonian Award to honor our founding President. Arduus ad Solem translates from Latin to “Striving towards the Sun,” and represents our mindset and culture whether it is in regards to archery as athletes, as members in our community, or as an organization.

Board of Officers

The SGA Board of Officers works tirelessly every year to run practice, hold events, host joint shoots, train athletes, and advance the mission of the club.
